Joining the Band - Prospective Band Members

The Notre Dame Band has many musical opportunities: Marching Band, multiple Concert Bands & Jazz Bands, Basketball & Hockey Varsity (Pep) Bands, and Section Ensembles. There is definitely a place for you in the Notre Dame Bands. Students at Notre Dame, Saint Mary's College, and Holy Cross College are all eligible to participate in the band.

Joining the Marching Band

The Band of the Fighting Irish is the premier musical ensemble of the Notre Dame Band program. With 380 members, the Band has students from across the nation representing every field of study. The Marching Band performs at every home Notre Dame Football game and select away games. The Marching Band has traveled both across the country and the world to states such as Florida, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and California, as well as countries such as Ireland. The Band also travels to neutral-site home games, aka "Shamrock Series" games,  performing in cities such as San Antonio, Washington D.C., Chicago, Dallas, and New York City.

Time Commitment

Marching Band rehearsals are held Monday through Thursday evenings in the fall semester for approximately 60-90 minutes each. Students find that balancing band and academics helps them organize their time more efficiently. The average GPA of the band is higher than the University average. 

Auditioning for the Band

Students wishing to audition for the Marching Band must attend Band Camp prior to the start of the fall semester as well as have both a marching and a music audition. Auditioning students typically move into their dorms on the Wednesday prior to the first day of class. Band Camp does not inerfere with First Year Orientation activities. 

How to Audition

There are just 3 steps you must complete in order to audition for the Band:

  1. Sign up to audition (click here to sign up)
  2. Prepare music sent during the summer and submit a virtual music audition (instructions will be sent over the summer)
  3. Attend Band Camp and complete your marching audition!
